Your Car Aircon Questions Answered

Your Top Rated Guide to Car Air Conditioning: An FAQ from JustFix Automotive

As we head into the warmer months here in Sunshine Victoria, the last thing you want is to be stuck in traffic with a car full of hot air. Your car’s air conditioning is a complex system, and it’s common to have questions about it.

As Sunshine 5.0-star rated, VACC Member workshop, we believe in honest answers and expert solutions. Here are the most frequently asked questions about car A/C systems and the signs you need a service.

Q: What’s the most obvious sign my car A/C needs re-gassing?

A: The most common sign is simple: your A/C is blowing warm or lukewarm air, even when the temperature is set to its coldest. You might also notice that the air is just not as cold as it used to be. On a hot Melbourne day, a healthy A/C system should be able to produce icy-cold air within a minute or two of starting.

Q: My aircon still works, but it takes a long time to cool the car down. Is that a problem?

A: Yes, this is a classic early warning sign of low refrigerant (gas). When the gas level is low, the A/C compressor has to work much harder and run for longer to achieve the same cooling effect. This not only makes you uncomfortable but also puts extra strain on the compressor (a very expensive component) and even increases your fuel consumption.

Q: Do I just need a simple “top-up” or “regas” every year?

A: This is the most important question we get, and the answer is NO. Your car’s A/C is a sealed system. If it is low on gas, it means there is a leak.

A cheap “regas-only” service from another workshop might feel good for a few weeks, but the gas will just leak out again, wasting your money and harming the environment.

At JustFix Automotive, our 5.0-star promise is we test, we don’t guess. Before we add any gas, we perform a professional leak detection test (using UV dye or nitrogen pressure testing) to find the root cause of the problem. We give you an honest diagnosis and a quote to fix the leak and regas the system, so it’s fixed properly the first time.

Q: My car is a 2018 model (or newer). Does it need a special gas?

A: Absolutely. Most vehicles manufactured after 2017/2018 use a new, environmentally-friendly refrigerant called R1234yf. You cannot mix this with the older R134a gas. Servicing these new systems requires completely different, specialised equipment and training.

We are proud to be fully certified (Autodata H01.2 – HVAC System Essentials) to service these modern R1234yf systems right here in our Sunshine North workshop. You don’t need to go to an expensive dealership; your local trusted mechanic is fully equipped.

Q: I hear a strange noise when I turn my A/C on. Is that related?

A: It very likely is. Listen for:

  • A hissing sound: This can indicate a leak in the system.
  • A clicking sound: This is often the A/C compressor clutch engaging and disengaging. If it’s clicking on and off very rapidly, it’s a classic sign that the system pressure is too low (not enough gas).
  • A grinding or squealing sound: This is a serious warning sign. It could mean the compressor itself is failing or the drive belt is slipping. Turn the A/C off immediately and have it inspected.

Ignoring these noises can lead to the compressor failing completely, which is one of the most expensive repairs on a car.

Q: My A/C smells musty, like old socks. Is that a gas problem?

A: This isn’t a gas problem, but it is a very common HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) issue. That musty smell is caused by bacteria, mould, and fungi growing on the A/C evaporator (the cold part) deep inside your dashboard.

We can fix this! We offer an anti-bacterial treatment that cleans the system, eliminating the mould and the smell. We also highly recommend replacing your cabin filter at the same time, which traps dust, pollen, and other gunk from the air you breathe.
